WEST BAY COMMUNITY BAND PERFORMS AT GOLDEN GATE PARK FESTIVAL
The West Bay Community Band is one of 11 bands that took to the stage in San Francisco for The Truly Great 2008 Second Annual Golden Gate Park Band Festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22.
The 40-plus members of the band, sponsored by the San Mateo Union High School District Adult School, experienced the thrill of performing at the landmark Spreckles Temple of Music bandshell in the music concourse next to the DeYoung Museum at Golden Gate Park.
The West Bay musicians entertained from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, under the direction of Doug Miner, who chose an eclectic program that included circus music, marches and more.
“We feel honored to have been invited to perform with so many great bands, and the West Bay musicians are working very hard to get ready for this concert,” Miner said. “We hope music lovers from the Peninsula had a chance to make a day of it and came to the park to hear the West Bay Band in this historic setting.” Begun in 2007 as part of the Golden Gate Park Band’s 125th birthday celebration, the weekend festival was so successful that organizers decided on an encore year.
Audiences got a chance to hear outstanding bands from as far away as Sacramento performing marches, light classics, show tunes, movie themes and more.
Bands performed from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. For the complete line-up for the festival weekend, visit www.goldengateparkband.org.
The West Bay Community Band, which is open to any musician who can read music, welcomes new members and auditions are not required. The band rehearses at 7 p.m. every Monday at Bayside Middle School in San Mateo (Bayside Middle School for the Summer).

The West Bay Community Band on the San Francisco peninsula is a Symphonic Band with instrumentation capable of performing all major works for wind instruments and symphonic band. It can facilitate sub-ensembles such as Jazz Band, Brass Choir and Woodwind groups. There will be about 6 to 10 performances per year at community events and dedicated concerts. Doug Miner (conductor, educator, recording artist and performer) leads the group.
Musicians Wanted!Have you ever wanted to be in a band but didnt think you were good enough? If so, were the band you are looking for. Our band is full of fun-loving musicians who enjoy playing music (to the best our abilities) and appreciate being a part of an ensemble. We would like to share the opportunity with others to dust off their instruments and join in the fun! (Course Outline PDF) (Registration Form PDF)
To get an idea of what we are up to, take a listen to a medley of tunes by George M. Cohan recorded at our last formal concert.
